Karuppu Kavuni
-
Karuppu Kavuni is the crown jewel of traditional Indian rice. Once known as "Forbidden Rice," this ancient black rice variety from Tamil Nadu is a powerhouse of nutrition. Its striking deep-purple hue is a natural sign of its high antioxidant content—even surpassing that of blueberries. With a rich, nutty flavour and a chewy texture, it is perfect for traditional desserts (Goundar Payasam), healthy breakfast bowls, or as a powerful nutritional supplement to your daily diet.
Nelvita Promise: 100% Pure & Natural. Completely unpolished and raw to retain its intense nutritional profile and natural pigments.
Health & Nutritional Benefits
- Antioxidant Powerhouse: Exceptionally high in Anthocyanins, the same powerful antioxidants found in super-fruits that help fight cancer and heart disease.
- Diabetes Management: Has one of the lowest glycemic indices of all rice varieties, making it excellent for controlling blood sugar levels.
- Natural Detoxifier: Helps the liver eliminate harmful toxins from the body and supports kidney health.
- Weight Wellness: Extremely high in fibre, which promotes a feeling of fullness and aids in healthy weight loss.
- Heart Health: Helps in lowering bad cholesterol (LDL) and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.
Cooking Instructions
Because Karuppu Kavuni is a thick, unpolished grain, it requires proper soaking to unlock its benefits:
- Soak: Rinse and soak the rice for at least 8–12 hours (overnight is best). Note: Do not throw away the soaking water; it contains the powerful purple antioxidants! Use it for cooking.
- Cook (Pressure Cooker): Use a 1:3 or 1:4 rice-to-water ratio. Cook for 6–8 whistles on a medium flame.
- Texture: The cooked grain will have a slight "pop" or chewiness, which is its natural characteristic.
- Serve: Delicious as a sweet porridge (with jaggery and coconut milk) or mixed with white rice for a nutritional boost in daily meals.
